EPAM-like Models of Recognition and Learning

چکیده
A description is provided of EPAM-III. a theory in the form of a computer progrom for simulating humon verbal leorning, olong with o summary of the empiricol evidence for its volidity. Criticisms leveled ogoinst the theory in o recent paper by Borsolou ond Bower ore shown to derive largely from their misconception that EPAM-III employed a binary. rother than n-ory branching discrimination net. It is shown thot Borsalou and Bower olsa foiled to understond how the recursive structure of EPA&III eliminates the need to duplicate test nodes thot are used to recognize subobjects, ond how the possibility of redundont recognition paths controls the sensitivity of EPAM to noticing order. EPAM is also compored briefly with other theories of humon discrimination and discrimination learning, including PANDEMONIUM-like systems and dotaflow nets.

EPAM/CHREST Tutorial: Fifty Years of Simulating Human Learning
Generating quantitative predictions for complex cognitive phenomena requires precise implementations of the underlying cognitive theory. The history of computational modelling includes many diverse approaches to this problem of creating process models. These include models of single phenomena (such as Sternberg’s model of STM; (Sternberg, 1966)), to integrated models covering a wide range of di...

CHREST (Chunk Hierarchy and REtrieval STructures) is a comprehensive, computational model of human learning and perception. It has been used to successfully simulate data in a variety of domains, including: the acquisition of syntactic categories, expert behaviour, concept formation, implicit learning, and the acquisition of multiple representations in physics for problem solving. The aim of th...

متن کاملDiscrimination Nets as Psychological Models
ion of discriminative properties will not be optimal. Optimal abstraction will only occur when a memory that contains the discriminativeness of properties is kept, and when this information is used to guide the encoding of properties. Even under optimal conditions for abstracting discriminative information, PPO nets have problems. Like EPAM nets, PPO nets often begin constructing the representa...
متن کاملSimulations of Stagewise Development with a Symbolic Architecture
This chapter compares Piaget’s theory of development with Feigenbaum and Simon’s (1962, 1984) EPAM theory. An attempt is made to map the concepts of assimilation and accommodation in Piaget’s theory onto the concepts of familiarisation and accommodation in EPAM. An EPAMlike model of the balance scale task is then presented, with a discussion of preliminary results showing how it accounts for ch...
